Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Headings and hierarchy
Some headings do not follow the appropriate heading hierarchy structure with occasional jumps to a lower level heading.
This fails SC 1.3.1: Info and Relationships. Examples of this failure are hard coded into some of our maps and cannot be manually overridden.
Chart areas
Some graphs and charts require a degree of horizontal scrolling when viewed on mobile devices. This fails SC 1.4.10 Reflow.
By-pass blocks
A general skip to content button is available but throughout the site, where there are interactive graphs, further skip methods should be made available to the user. Additional work will be completed to ensure that navigation landmarks are used in a more predictable way. The related SC is 2.4.1 By-pass blocks.
Content not within the scope of accessibility regulations
We use maps to dispaly geographic information. We have done our best to improve the accessibility of our maps with appropriate labels and colours. The lack of labels in some of our maps would fail SC 2.5.3. However, maps are exempt from the accessibility regulations.
Disproportionate burden
Reading age
The reading age of materials for much of the website is higher than ‘lower secondary’ level. This is due to the technical and detail necessary to produce our reports. Therefore the website does fail on SC 3.1.5 Reading Level.
We believe that we have provided multiple means of understanding the information available, and that it would be of disproportionate burden to alter the language in what is a naturally complex field.
PDFs
The PDFs that are generated from chart areas do not yet come with tags to make them screen reader compatible. While long term we do want to rectify this for PDF users, we do provide the content in multiple other formats for users to choose.
