LG Inform Glossary

Accordion

Sections a user’s works through in the report builder to compile a component. The accordion opens up in sections to walk through the process of personalising a component

Area

A local authority or the geographical area for which it is responsible. Each geographical area has a GSS code. Each local authority has a single geographical area. Whether “Area” refers to the geography or an area is dependent on the metric type applied. Every metric value has an area.

Average

The average is calculated by summing the list of numbers, then divided by the size of the list

Chart

A visual representation of data from the LGA database in the form of a table, graph, or diagram.

Comparison group

A group defining the areas or areas across which a statistical operation (e.g. average) is performed

Content

This includes anything contained within the report e.g., Title, Description, Tags, Charts, Text etc.

Custom report

This is a report created by users.

Dashboard

A snapshot view of important information.

Dataset

A set of one or more metric types with common characteristics and from the same source

Dimension

A means by which metrics for a dataset are subdivided (e.g. “gender”). For the purposes of LG Inform, “dimension” is defined as excluding the fixed dimensions of “Area” and “Time”.

Dimension member

A member of a sub-division, as defined by dimension (e.g. “Female”)

Display group

A group defining which area or areas are shown

Export

This will allow content to be transferred from the Report Builder to other software or websites.

Functions

This is a category above services, for example, Environmental protection, Street care and cleaning Waste management

Group

A pre-defined set of areas or areas (each of which has an area) used for display and/or statistical comparison

LGA Standard Report

Formerly known as ‘Detailed Metric View’

Lead authority

By default, this will be your authority, and when selected in components it will be highlighted in bold.

Lightbox

Lightboxes contain additional user options and are triggered by certain events e.g. export lightbox would offer the user the choice of formats for exporting.

Map

A visual representation of data collected allowing the user to see how one location compares to the next relating to geographical locations

Mean

The average is calculated by summing the list of numbers, then dividing by the size of the list

Median

The median is the numerical value separating the higher half of a data sample from the lower half.

Measure

A means of expressing raw metric values (e.g. count, percentage of a dimension or a function of another metric type, such as percentage of population)
Derived value A value derived from a metric value in comparison with others. Derived values can be:

- Direction of travel
- Difference
- Quantile group within a specified comparison group
- Standard deviation within a specified comparison group
- Equal ranges within a specified comparison group
- Rank, within a specified comparison group

Metric type

The type of statistic that is shown, as defined by a specific combination of the dataset, measure or dimension

Metric value

Raw value (as defined by the “measure”) for a metric type for given dimensions. Each metric value is uniquely identified by its metric type, area and date range

Percentile

A quantile with 100 sub-divisions

Polarity

A label indicating whether a high or low value is good.

Public

Any user that does not have login details.

Quantile

A subdivision of a set of values such that an equal number of values falls into each division.

Quartile

A quantile with four sub-divisions

Report canvas

This is a WYSIWYG area in which content is entered into. From here the layout and content of the report can be manipulated.

Services

This is something that is provided by the government. For example, road maintenance, recycling and collection of waste and council house allocation.

Summary value

A value derived from a set of metric values. These can be: Total, Minimum, Maximum, Average or Threshold for a specific quantile

Table

The simplest form of displaying data, showing raw data in figures and text.

Text

The text refers to any content entered via the WYSIWYG editor within the report builder.

Time

A date range with a unique identifier, label and bounding start and end dates. Every metric value has time.

Unpublished

This is data that has not been checked via the required methods. Verifying data can take a considerable amount of time and therefore users can use unverified data if they need more current information as long as they realise that it has not been checked.

Value type

A categorisation of how values are expressed which can be the metric value or a specific type of metric derived value
